Dr. Tommy Mitchell

Talk 1: Suicide and Euthanasia
Talk 2: Jurassic Prank: A Dinosaur Tale
Date: February 9th, 7:00pm

Rocky Mountain Creation Fellowship is privileged to have as our February speaker, Dr. Tommy Mitchell. Dr. Mitchell is a staff speaker with Answers in Genesis. The title of Dr. Mitchell’s first talk will be Suicide and Euthanasia.

Dr. Mitchell graduated with a BA with highest honors from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in 1980 with a major in Cell Biology and a minor in Biochemistry. For his superior scholarship during his undergraduate study, he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa Society (the oldest and one of the most-respected honor societies in America). Dr. Mitchell subsequently attended Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, where he was granted an MD degree in 1984.

Dr. Mitchell’s residency was completed at Vanderbilt University Affiliated Hospitals in 1987. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, with a medical practice in Gallatin, Tennessee (the city of his birth, by the way). In 1991, he was elected to the Fellowship in the American College of Physicians (F.A.C.P.). Dr. Mitchell is an avid photographer and has been fortunate to have had three of his photographs published in The New England Journal of Medicine.

Dr. Mitchell was saved at age 17, but soon thereafter went to college where he was under the influence of many professors who promoted evolutionary ideas. He became a theistic evolutionist, as he tried to reconcile his new-found faith with the evolutionary worldview set forth in his undergraduate studies and in medical school.

After returning home to begin his new medical practice, Dr. Mitchell, after much reading, became convicted of the errors of the evolutionary philosophies he had been taught. God soon opened his eyes to the truth of the biblical record, and saw that His Word was indeed true from the very first verse. In the mid-1990s, Dr. Mitchell was privileged to meet Ken Ham and became an avid supporter of AiG.

In 1999, he served as seminar chairman for an extremely well-attended Answers in Genesis conference (featuring Ken) held in Hendersonville, Tennessee (near Nashville). Over the years, he has spoken on creation in many churches and venues, including overseas evangelistic mission efforts to Poland, the Ukraine and Jamaica. Ken Ham of AIG states, “Dr. Mitchell has studied the creation message for several years and is extremely knowledgeable about biblical apologetics—he has also been influenced by the many AiG lectures he has heard over the years.”

Dr. Mitchell has been married to his wife Elizabeth for 23 years, and has three daughters. His hobbies include Martin guitars, Gibson mandolins, anything to do with Bill Monroe (the famous bluegrass musician) and large-format black-and-white photography.

Dr. Mitchell will be speaking on Suicide and Euthanasia and what the Bible teaches about these topics. But what does the Bible say about assisted suicide (Ed. Note these words people use seem to me to be a contradiction in terms). Is it ok to help someone to kill themselves if they are in great pain or have no life at all in a vegetable state? Where do Christians stand on these topics? What does the Bible say about them. This topic is very personal to Dr. Mitchell as he had to deal with them during his medical career. Dr. Mitchell will also be speaking on a second topic entitled Jurassic Prank: A Dinosaur Tale. After his lectures, a DVD will be available on both topics. Please let your friends know about Dr. Mitchell's talk as these topics are currently at the forefront in our society today.
